Getting to Know…MelodyMuse in 10 Questions

February 27th, 2008· 4 Comments

In this special edition of “getting to know…” we’re going to see the human side to a super hero. She’s known as Melody Mooney by day (or MelodyMuse on etsy) and fights crime and grime under the alias Hygena on SciFi Channel’s Who Wants to Be a Superhero?

1. Have you been a crafter your entire life?
Yes, I have been big on creating costumes and crafts since I was just a wee little one!

2. What other crafts or hobbies do you have?
Well, besides being Hygena a Grime and Crime fighting Superhero on ‘Who wants to be a Superhero’, I love to act, go to the movies and I read a lot.

3. Describe your personal style in three words.
Geek Girl Goodies

4. How did you begin making the the types of items you have in your shop (rings, wings, etc)?
I began making the items in my shop when I looked around me and saw that there weren’t too many cute things for girls who love Star Wars. It sort of started with the Star Wars Hairpins and grew from there. The Wings came from a love of all things whimsical and I made some for friends who just loved them.

5. Where do you draw your inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from so many places. I love to look at other creative people in the crafting community and see what they are doing and I like to try and fill the spots that I see empty.

6. When did you decide that these were good enough to sell?
I decided that my items were good enough to sell when I had so many people tell me that they would buy my cute things if I put them up for sale. ETSY was a logical place to start!

7. What would you say is the hardest part about selling your goods?
The hardest part of selling my goods is the waiting. It takes a lot to list things, from the pictures to the descriptions to the upkeep and it can be discouraging when nothing sells. Patience is really the key to longevity!

8. Is etsy the only place we can find your items for sale? (Do you go to craft fairs, trade shows, sell to other stores, etc?)
Right now, Etsy is the only online place where my items are for sale. I do take them to Conventions with me and sell them just by wearing the hair pins and rings. I am hoping to branch out into other mediums.

9. Do you have any advice to give fellow crafters that are hoping to get into the selling business?
My advice is to always keep creating. Love what you are making and have fun with the listing descriptions. I have bought things on ETSY just because I cracked up at the sellers sense of humor, so let your personality show!

10. Where do you hope to see MelodyMuse within the next five years?
I hope that MelodyMuse has expanded to a larger company in the next five years. I want to work with my other creative friends and have a sort of community store with lots of different styles and crafts.
